I'm installing the new steering knuckle seal kit I got from you on my 1949 CJ3A. I'm cleaning all the parts and checking for worn parts. The upper and lower king pin bearing caps on both sides have shims under them. If I put them back on the way they came off will the preload still be right or do I need a new shim pack to set it back right? Thanks for all of your help!

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
Yes, re shim and confirm the pull is correct per the manual. We can help too.

What is the torque value on the king pin bolts on 1959 CJ5?

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
I believe 55-65 pounds but will need to confirm.

I am rebuilding the frontend of my 59 pickup. The driver side lower king pin that holds the steering arm has larger bolts than the passenger side lower king pin. The manual stated that the lower king pins should have .058 shims between the steering knuckle and king pin and that the preload is being set by using shims under the upper king pin. The problem is that the shims all have small holes that only fit the right hand kingpins and the upper driver side. What's a guy to do? Thank you, Otto

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
Email mike@kaiserwillys.com some pictures of what your looking at and we can help out.

Will the shim pack kit help with proper wheel alignment? I recently replaced kingpin bearings on one side and now the tire is wearing out on the outerside but the wheels are straight with each other.

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
It sets preload on the bearings for your king pin.

Got a 1955 Willys 3 cjB, before she went to a mechanic I've never experienced death wobble but now i have it. can the shims be replaced or taken off from one side only? also bottom ones do not have any shims, would i need to put some on? thank you.

Bob:
Some time during the production of the CJ2A, they started using lower king pins that already had a .058" shim built in. You can't really see the shim because it's part of the king pin. On these and all later model Jeeps, you shim the upper king pin only. Do not add shims to the lower king pin. The early king pins such as on the MBs and early CJ2As, has to be shimmed equally on the top and bottom. It should take 12 to 16 lbs. pull to swing the knuckle. On the MBs and GPWs, I believe the pull is around 4 to 8 pounds. I can't find the old manual so not absolutely sure.
Willys Tech:
You usually need shims on each side. They really are only needed either top or bottom but im sure you could do both to equal out. I would get part number: SJ-7100 to help out too.

Hi I am restoring CJ3B can I throw Dana 27 front axle on it or what is the major difference in Dana 25 and Dana 27 Thankyou

Willys Tech:
They will interchange. The main thing is make sure your ring & pinion ratios are the same.

What is the shim arrangement on the 45-GPW? Same top & bottom - top only - bottom only?

Willys Tech:
Typically one kit will be enough.

My manual doesn't address how many or which thickness shim (s) should go under the top and bottom king pin block. How do I find out how many shims are need and where?

Willys Tech:
You typically can shim either - we usually do equal amounts till you receive the proper pivot tension when turning the wheel.

The manual states that there should be a .058 shim in the lower knuckle pin bracket. Does this kit have one as mine had none when I disaasembled it?

Willys Tech:
Yes it will have the proper shims in it.
