What is the length, end to end, of this shaft? (Actually, it would be good to know the length of both driver and passenger side shafts)

Does the axel just gets pulled with a slide hammer. Does it require you to remove the differential cover to remove any retaining clips?

No on the cover. You need part number: HP600 hub puller.
