I understand some fuel gauges have to be matched with the sending unit because of ohms/resistance. What will these work with?

I have a converted 53 M38A1. Fuel gauge doesn't work. Getting ready to order 12Volt tank sending unit.... Will original gauge work and or is there a 12 volt version? Thanx -
