How do I know if I use an amp gauge vs a volt gauge?

I believe typically if you have an original generator you need to use an ammeter and if you have an unoriginal alternator you need to use a volt gauge.

Will it work on 24 volt?

MB & GPW were 6 volt originally. The 24 volt gauges for the M38 & M38A1 are part number: 24VAMP
