can the case be ground open to utilize the original dash lights......so the light can come in?

I bought this gauge (8376374) for my restoration and it works perfectly, but the back light it didn't work. Can you tell me why? and if I bought the wrong part. Please let me know. and if I need to buy another one, please let me know which part number.
