when i turn the vehicle either way, there is a thunk sound from the back end...i think there is some shifting or play in the springs moving side to side...does this sound familiar ( a common indicator) as the bushings become worn?

Its probabaly heavily worn shackles possibly. I would have the whole rear end inspected.
