how easy / how much pressure should it take to put the gear on the shaft ? can it be taped on ? or do you need a press ?

Is the four lobe gear ( rotor ) on the end of the shaft 7/8 of a inch long. I've a 1952 M38 with a aluminum housing oil pump, the oil pressure valve is on the side of the housing. my engine number is MC80836.
