Do you need to remove the outer bearing race to change this seal or only the axle shaft?

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
yes that is right. Its in the housing. Bearings are to the outside of it.

Hi This is Seiichi Shioi from Tokyo Japan. I would like to confirm the innner and outer size of your parts 640959. I am looking for alternative parts for MJM02743 Mitsubishi Jeep rear axle inner oil seal. Best Regards

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
OD: 2-1/4" ID: 1-3/8"

Do I need a gasket also, or will Permatex alone work?

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
There is no gasket that would be required with the inner seal.

Does the metal part or the rubber part go to the inside?

Willys Tech:
The metal part goes to the inside. This is the seal by your carrier bearings.

Is there a differential vent on a Dana 44 rear end like there is on the 27 in the front?

Willys Tech:
Typically no.

Is there a special puller I need to pull the axle so I can replace inner oil seal on the rear Dana 41? i have everything off down to the flang that the brake backing plate mounts on but if I pull on the axle, nothing moves.

Willys Tech:
HP600 is the part number for our hub puller you will need.

How about the oil seal for the wheel drum bearing for the dana 44 ? Do you have one ,if so what is the part number for the seal.

Willys Tech:
That is part number: 914802

What is the best way to pull these. Do you have a special tool for pulling and then putting the new ones back in.

Willys Tech:
We usually just use a needle nose screw driver to get the old one out. You want to tap the new one in evenly and seat it.

I recently purchased 2 inner seals from you for my dana 44 on a 67 cj5. When I removed the differential there were no seals. Does this axle require inner seals inside the case? I didnt have issues with an oil leak. I was doing this as part of a restoration. I'm not sure why these seals are missing if they were required. I've had this jeep since the early 70s and dont recall work being done to the axle.

Willys Tech:
This is the inner seal that goes by the inner carrier bearings.

How many per axle?

Willys Tech:
2 per axle.
